Prosenjit Chatterjee: Still evergreen

Looking dapper in a white shirt, National Award-winning Bengali actor and director, Prosenjit Chatterjee still commands a great deal of attention, as is evident by a crowd full of enthusiastic people, wanting to click a selfie with him. The actor, who was in the city, has featured in more than 300 films over 30 years. Among his repertoire — Rituparno Ghosh’s Chokher Bali (co-starring Aishwarya Rai), Dosar (for which he won National Award – Silver Lotus), Autograph, Moner Manush and The Last Lear.
The Hyderabad Bengalee Samiti has roped in Prosenjit to be the face of its film festival, scheduled early next year. The actor admits that he is looking to start his career down South and that Hyderabad has always been dear to him, as most of his commercial films have been shot at the Ramoji Film City. “I have been working in the Bengali movie industry and forayed into Bollywood with a character role in Shanghai. It’s the right time for me to venture into different regions,” he says.
He adds, “I am in talks with directors from Tollywood. Hyderabad has a huge Bengali population, and my sole point of coming back was to cater to that audience.” While Prosenjit is a brand in himself in the Bengali movie industry, he is eager to try his luck here. “I have been acting since I was four, and then directing and producing films. If the script is good, I don’t mind even playing a negative role in Tollywood,” he says. So, will Hyderabad be his second home after Kolkata? “The city is special to me. My wife craves for the biscuits here. I am all geared up,” he concludes.
