The torrential rains have not only battered the roads but also posed a spate of health problems. With the top layer of the roads being completely washed away, minute dust particles rises causing air pollution.

Pulmonologists have been warning people to take extra care and use a mask while travelling. Dr Vishnun Rao Veerapaneni, specialist in asthma, chest diseases, Swasa Hospital says, “Dust of less than two microns is harmful as it not only disturbs the lungs but blocks the airways, affects eyes and enters into the blood stream.” He has further added, “People need to be careful and use masks.”

There is a 15 per cent increase in patients suffering from asthma in the hospitals. Dr Eashwar Prasad, a private practitioner said, “A number of very young and old people are complaining of breathing problems and it is due to the dust particles in the air.

Organic dust that emanates from bacteria, viruses, animal waste is already causing problems and with the dust increasing in the air, people are becoming more susceptible to problems, said doctors. Dr Vishnun said, “As the roads are in bad shape, diesel vehicles slow down and as result emit more fumes which is a major cause for worry. Infants and elderly are more prone to attacks.”

Ramesh, a software engineer said the Begumpet to Paradise Circle stretch is virtually covered by a cloud of dust. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) should clean the roads. The thin layer of softy dust is causing a lot of problems.

Dr Eashwar, who treated close to 10 patients on Tuesday, said that a majority of patients came with issues that were directly related to dust. The roads at Punjagutta, Kukatpally, Dilshuknagar, Tarnaka, Bowenpally, Balanagar, Sanatnagar, Lakdikapul and beyond have required immediate repairs.Humidity, dust, fumes from diesel vehicles, viruses, bacteria and mosquitoes are causing havoc say experts.
